Causes of strong urine odor
Strong-smelling urine occurs regularly. It is usually harmless, but it can be unpleasant for the person affected or for those around them. Urine generally does not have a very strong smell. If a person drinks enough and has no other problems, the urine has hardly any noticeable odor.
Certain foods such as asparagus, salmon, garlic, and some spices can affect the smell of urine. Sometimes, strong-smelling urine can also point to health problems such as urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and prostate problems.
However, not drinking enough is a common cause of strong-smelling urine.
Urine is usually light yellow, acidic, and almost odorless. As long as people drink enough, their urine has little or no smell. Insufficient fluid intake is therefore the main reason for strongly smelling urine.
If dehydration is the cause of strong-smelling urine, the urine usually becomes darker in color. Urine that is too concentrated causes a strong ammonia smell.
Waste products in urine often have an odor, but urine is normally diluted enough that you do not notice these waste products. However, when urine becomes more concentrated — meaning there are more waste products in relation to the amount of fluid — it is more likely to smell strongly of ammonia. Urea is one of the waste products in urine. It is a by-product of protein breakdown and, under certain circumstances, can be further broken down into ammonia. That is why many conditions that lead to concentrated urine can cause your urine to smell like ammonia.
If your urine occasionally smells like ammonia, this is usually not a reason to worry. You may simply need to drink more water to dilute your urine. However, if the changed urine odor is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain or possible signs of infection like fever, you should consult your family doctor.
